JUST FINISHED WATCHING: INVENTING ANNA (2022)

JUST FINISHED WATCHING: INVENTING ANNA (2022)

A journalist with a lot to prove investigates the case of Anna Delvey, the Instagram-legendary German heiress who stole the hearts of New York's social scene - and stole their money as well.

TRIVIA: Lead Julia Garner actually visited Anna Delvey (born Anna Sorokin) in Rikers Island prison as part of her research for the role. In the course of their conversation, Delvey asked Garner how the shoot was going and how she was going to portray her in the series. Garner found Delvey to be quite intimidating at times, even with journalist and series co-writer Jessica Pressler present in the room throughout the interview.

The role Anna Chlumsky is playing is based on the same journalist Julia Stiles portrayed 4 years earlier in "Hustlers" (2018)

Of the 9 episodes in the series, five were directed by women and four by men.

Arian Moayed (Todd) and Caitlin FitzGerald (Mags) both appeared in Succession (2018)

MY VERDICT:

I was really looking forward to watching this show. I had listened to the excellent podcast Fake Heiress and became fascinated by the story. There have been a few of these tales of people doing the whole ‘Fake It Till You Make It’ thing recently and I’ve been fascinated by them all! Especially the Elizabeth Holmes story. This one differs in many ways but the overall theme is the same – it’s the story of someone who wants something so bad they pretend that this thing is true.

The acting is great and the story is very detailed and well-told. The characters all seem very true to the real life people in the story. It is told from the point of view of the journalist who broke this story and then each episode focuses for a time on each of the characters. It’s an interesting way to tell this story, you certainly couldn’t tell it from one view point as Anna touched so many different people in different ways and her lies and her impact on your life was different depending on who you were. Even if you have read the articles and listened to the podcast I would recommend watching this as there’s so much to it and it’s binge-worthy and entertaining. And that accent!

I would love to discuss with anyone who knows anything about this story as to whether they feel sorry for Rachel or not as to me this is one of the most interesting aspects of this story. Leave a comment below…

Also I know they’re not really a thing now but I would love a Fake German Heiress T-shirt!
