FILM 2163: BIRDS OF PREY (2020)

TRIVIA: Jurnee Smollett-Bell does her own singing in the film.

Being produced under the working title of "Fox Force Five." Fox Force Five was the name of a fictional television show that never made it past the production of its pilot in the movie Pulp Fiction (1994).

When Harley Quinn is leaving the police precinct she points to a wanted poster and says "Hey, I know that guy!". The wanted poster is that of Captain Boomerang with whom she worked with in Suicide Squad (2016).

Before Ewan McGregor was cast as Black Mask, Sharlto Copley and Sam Rockwell were considered to play Black Mask. Rockwell passed on the role, but was considered the "archetype" for the casting.

When Renee Montoya is in her apartment, her television is playing a clip from an episode of daytime soap opera Days of Our Lives (1965) and featuring actress Arleen Sorkin. Sorkin was the original voice of Harley Quinn in Batman: The Animated Series (1992). This specific clip is what inspired writer Paul Dini to create the character of Harley.

Harley only has a single hyena rather than two because the effects for its photorealistic animation were so intensive they could only afford one.

Renee is the first canonically gay character in either a Marvel or DC movie and when we're introduced to her ex-girlfriend (played by Ali Wong) it's a nice nod to the queer history of the character who once dated Kate Kane's Batwoman.

In honor of the film hitting digital, Bruno Oliver showed us how to make the delicious-looking supporting character. The recipe takes bacon, eggs, American cheese and bread Oliver recommends ciabatta so there are "nooks and crannies for the gooey eggness to go into." Because of the current pandemic, Oliver had to go to four different stores within the week to find all the ingredients.
