 INSPIRATION: ART & DESIGN: VILHELM HAMMERSHØI

I hadn’t heard of this artist until fairly recently, although his work looks strangely familiar. I normally share with you contemporary art but this is a little bit different, only because I think he is much more unknown than he should be. Born in Denmark in 1864, Hammershøi (whose name is often anglicised as Hammershoi) is known for his distinct poetic, subdued portraits and interiors.  

In 1905, Rainer Maria Rilke wrote of the artist, "Hammershøi is not one of those about whom one can speak quickly. His work is wide-ranging and slow, and at whatever moment one comprehends it, it will always provide an opportunity to talk about what is important and essential in art".
