I don’t want to be obvious by dropping a stationery blog post right in the middle of back-to-school season, but it just kind of happened this way, I promise. In a dimly lit corner of Tehran’s Grand Bazaar, Mohammad Rafi’s small shop stands out with its display of art pencils. Despite the digital age, Rafi remains loyal to his passion for the past 35 years, surrounded by a multitude of pencils in every imaginable hue and shade.

With pencils filling his cubicle from floor to ceiling, his modest space has transformed into a captivating burst of color, tucked away in the bustling market known as a “city within a city.” “I can’t say how many pencils I have, but I offer around 200 different colors,” proudly states Rafi, the 50-year-old proprietor of Medad Rafi (Rafi’s Pencils) shop
