TRIVIA: Penn Badgley almost turned down the role of Joe as he feared that the show would romanticize toxic behavior such as stalking. He was convinced after producers told him that that was the exact reason why he was right for the role- he would approach the show and part in a way that would ensure that Joe is clearly the villain of the story.

Mark Blum, who played bookstore owner Mr. Mooney in Season 1, was set to reprise the role in flashbacks in Season 3, but died of complications from COVID-19 in March 2020 before filming began.

Penn Badgley's dialogue was predominantly 'thought' voice-overs which meant he didn't have as many on-camera lines to learn and remember. He has estimated that at least 80% of his lines are voice-overs.

The first season aired on Lifetime, the network ordering the second season before the first episode aired in September 2018. With low ratings on the cable network, Lifetime backed out of airing the drama's second season. Netflix picked the series and began streaming the series in December, 2018.

Greg Berlanti, one of the executive producers, has hinted that Joe's most disturbing trait isn't the murders - it's how he convinces us, the audience, to root for him.

MY VERDICT: This show is slightly ridiculous but incredibly watchable. As the story continues I think the camp splits and people can turn one of two ways, they’re either on Joe’s side or they are disgusted by Joe. Of course there’s that weird group that loves and hates Joe at the same time and they find him so wrong but don’t want him to get caught so they can see what crazy thing he does next. I’m obviously not part of this group. In the end, rightly, the show displays the real Joe, and I think it ends well. I was a little worried at first that the clearly mentally ill thoughts Joe displayed were not going to be construed as such because of the perspective of the show (his) but his estimation of others was finally his downfall and we see the stories he tells from an outside view.
