JUST FINISHED WATCHING: THE NIGHT OF (2016)

JUST FINISHED WATCHING: THE NIGHT OF (2016)i

After a night of partying with a woman he picked up, a man wakes up to find her stabbed to death and is charged with her murder.

TRIVIA: Robert De Niro stepped in to take over the role originally played by the late James Gandolfini. When scheduling issues forced De Niro to drop out, John Turturro took the role.

HBO originally passed on the pilot. HBO later picked up the series after James Gandolfini and Steven Zaillian agreed to make a mini-series instead of an open-ended series. Gandolfini died suddenly a month later.

"The Night Of" is based on a British TV series that ran from 2008-09 called "Criminal Justice." This can be confirmed by credit that is displayed after each episode.

MY VERDICT: I’ve seen this show twice now, it’s no less impactful the second time around. You really feel for the lead, expertly acted by Riz Ahmed, and his hapless attorney played beautifully by John Turturro. It gives an insight rarely seen by crime shows into all aspects of the crime, the detectives and the courts and the families and how everyone is effected by a ripple of an incedent. The show is well shot, something I noticed more on my second watch, its very textural.
